Tankless Water Heater Conversion
Trading the tank for a wall-hung unit is more than a swap, it's new gas sizing, new venting, and new plumbing routes, done right in one visit. We've converted hundreds of Bloomington homes from tank to tankless, from 1920s Elm Heights basements to Renwick new-builds.
Why conversion is its own job
A tank sips gas all day; a tankless unit gulps it on demand. Most Bloomington homes were plumbed with a 1/2-inch gas branch that can’t feed a 150,000–199,000 BTU burner, so we run or upsize the line. The old metal flue that vented your tank can’t be reused either, condensing units vent in PVC out a side wall. Doing this properly is most of the price difference, and skipping it is how conversions go wrong.
What happens on install day
Morning: drain and pull the old tank, cap and reroute water lines to the new wall location. Midday: mount the unit, run the upsized gas line, core the vent penetration, plumb the condensate drain. Afternoon: fire it, set temperatures, check gas pressure under full load, and walk you through the controls. You cook dinner with hot water that never quits.
Is conversion worth it for you?
Best case: households of 3+ that keep running out of hot water, homes where the tank eats prime storage or garage space, and owners planning to stay 5+ years, the energy savings and the 20-year unit life need time to pay back. If you’re selling in two years, we’ll say so and quote you a tank instead.

Can every house convert?
Nearly. The real constraints are a viable vent route to an exterior wall and adequate gas meter capacity. We check both in the quote visit, free, no obligation.
What about electric tankless?
Whole-house electric tankless needs 100+ amps of spare panel capacity, which few Bloomington homes have. For most conversions, gas condensing units are the practical answer.
Will my water bill change?
Water use stays the same, but expect roughly 20–30% off the water-heating share of your gas bill, since nothing sits hot around the clock anymore.
